Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this knowledge-based CE session, participants should be able to

  1. Interpret and integrate microbiology data from gram stain results, preliminary results and final identification and susceptibility reports to choose the most appropriate antibiotic regimen for a patient
  2. Discuss the importance of appropriate antibiotic utilization
  3. Compare and contrast antibiotics/antibiotic classes based on their spectrum of activity, pharmacokinetic parameters and adverse effects
  4. Provided a specific clinical scenario select the most appropriate antibacterial therapy taking into consideration the spectrum of activity, pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic parameters and adverse effects to maximize efficacy and reduce toxicity
  5. Describe antibiotic related allergic reactions and design an appropriate treatment plan for a patient with a documented beta lactam allergy
  6. Review the role and utilization of novel antibacterial agents
  7. List the core elements of antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASP) and provide examples of key ASP initiatives
