6:00 pm — ICD-10-CM Coding Guidelines & Advanced Code Assignment

Descriptive Summary:

This session provides medical coders with a practical review of ICD-10-CM coding conventions and official guidelines used for accurate diagnosis code assignment. Emphasis will be placed on navigating the Alphabetic Index and Tabular List, sequencing diagnoses, applying instructional notes, and selecting the most specific code supported by documentation. Participants will also review common coding errors and challenging coding situations encountered in daily practice.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

1. Apply ICD-10-CM conventions and official coding guidelines to diagnosis coding.
2. Navigate the Alphabetic Index and Tabular List to identify appropriate codes.
3. Determine appropriate sequencing of principal/first-listed and additional diagnoses.
4. Select the most specific ICD-10-CM code supported by the available documentation.
5. Identify common coding errors and apply strategies to improve coding accuracy.

This session focuses on the practical application of the FY 2026 ICD-10-CM updates for medical coders. Participants will review significant new, revised, and deleted codes and examine how the changes affect code assignment, sequencing, and documentation requirements. Through case-based exercises, coders will apply the updated guidelines and codes to realistic clinical scenarios while identifying potential coding errors and compliance concerns.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

1. Identify significant new, revised, and deleted ICD-10-CM codes for FY 2026.
2. Apply 2026 ICD-10-CM guideline changes to real-world coding scenarios.
3. Determine appropriate code selection and sequencing based on updated requirements.
4. Evaluate clinical documentation to determine whether it supports accurate code assignment.
5. Recognize potential coding errors and compliance concerns associated with the 2026 updates.

Accreditation

Medical Records Coders: An application has been submitted to the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) for three (3) continuing education credits.

All Other Healthcare Professionals: You will receive a general certificate of attendance. Please check with your accreditation board with respect to receiving credit for this program.

Training and Employment Fund Members

Members must have been a part-time or full-time employee for at least one year, work at least three-fifths of a regular workweek, and work for an employer who contributes to the 1199SEIU League Training and Upgrading Fund or the 1199SEIU Greater New York Education Fund.

City of New York Education, Child and Eldercare Fund Members

Pharmacists, Dietitians, Clinical Laboratory Practitioners and LPNs must have worked with NYC Health + Hospitals or a mayoral agency for at least one year.
